Mika Yin Qiao Bio

Brought to life by http://www.startwo.net/index.html

The younger sister of Princess Rin, and youngest child of the King and Queen of Xerathis.  When she was born the kingdom rejoiced at seeing a mother princess to the head family, assumed that as she grew her single tail would turn into nine like Rin's.  As the years passed it became clear that no more tails would grow, and the visitors lessened every day.  Many saw her single tail as a bad omen, but most simply found her beneath their notice compared to her older sister.  Despite being a princess she found herself mostly ignored, and only given the bare minimum of respect tradition demanded, while her older sister was treated like a proper princess. Away from the spotlight, she began to study with her grandmother and learned to be a fighter instead of a princess. Whenever she was home however, she mostly slipped through the cracks became of a delinquent, acting out and playing tricks on people in order to actually be noticed by those around her. Eventually leading into enough trouble that she was sent off to learn proper respect and discipline from the Empress, though she still finds time to train with her grandmother.

Ka Nuk-Ta Bio

Brought to life by Kopi
One of the first Alpha Oni born into the new more organized Ka-Tu tribe, a group of Oni focusing on forming a proper Oni nation.  Ka was raised in a mix of traditional Oni culture and her tribes new modernized ideals. She was strong and quickly learned to use her strength to help her tribe's goals with her ferocious persona aiding to keep more reckless Oni in line.  As her home land of Baji plunged into Chaos her chief sent her to aid their human allies of Shima, where she takes part in a strike force aiming to end the darkness of their land before it affects the Oni as well.  She has lived there for several years in the present day, and has slowly adopted parts of human culture to better fit in.  Despite that she is an Oni through and through and finds true bliss on the battlefield, voting to travel to Zhu as soon as Keiji brought the idea up.

Maru Bio

Art brought to life by http://www.startwo.net/index.html

Maru is the youngest of Dokura Ibeshi's two children. Unlike his older sister, Maru wasn't assigned a future job at an early age and as such lacks the specialized experience and training Rani had at his age.  He has been mostly left to his own devices, and is still in school trying to figure out what he wants to do when his schooling ends. He has a more distant relationship with his famous mother, who spends most of her time trying to keep Rani under control.  As a result he often feels more ignored and instead looks to his sister for advice and comfort as he tries to find his place in the world.

Bajin Oni Concept

There is more to the setting than just the Zhu Empire. A major part of the early stories will also be the Baji Isles, a japan based setting within the larger world.  I couldn't do Japanese inspired fantasy without Oni so they were something I spent some time making.  I'll save the details for when they get a race post along other Bajin races, but here are the ideas behind them.

The base idea came from sort of the modern view of them, large orge like creatures who love to drink normally have red skin and horns.  Kept that for both male and females, but took the anime route and made sure they look humanish in the face. I went with the more humanized ideas of them and gave them distinct cultures and societies with customs beyond base urges. I based their cultures loosely on the old pop culture view of Native Americans, with a little mongol thrown in.  Making them quasi nomadic tribes with their own specific customs based on the area they are found in.  Known to be aggressive towards outsiders but can be reasoned with and have established trade relationships with certain settlements. They are the most physically dominant race in Baji in my setting and you will often see them in physical roles in any appearance in my games normally solo against groups of humans.

Maru Concept

I don't normally do the concepts for minor characters because there isn't much to say, but I'll say a little for those curious.  The idea for Maru was my desire to add more younger characters and to explore different family dynamics. I decided Rani needed a sibling and what cuter than a brother who was more reserved and shy while she was aggressive and bold. I decided to have him be shorter and smaller muscle wise than her, though he will eventually grow taller than she is.  But he will stay smaller in terms of muscles and weaker, as she is the strength of the family and someone who he is meant to look up to.

Update

Just an update on things. Slow going currently due to various issues on both end and the side of some artists, but still plan to have a new playable demo soon, though possibly on a different character then was planned.

Also will be some more info on characters within the next week or so. and I'm working on a comic project here is a very rough sketch as evidence.

Jykira

One of the domesticated animals within the primary setting. The Jykira serves sort of the dog role in that it is a very common pet and also used by law enforcement and hunters. You may see a few of them in backgrounds in the VN, but more likely in the other projects like comics and stories.

Zy-Karo

Zy-Karo are the primary method of long distance communication within the Zhu Empire. They are small discs made out of various types of local stone that can serve as energy conduits (the more complex ones using higher quality/rarer stone). It is activated by the user connecting their own internal energy to the disc which fills the center and illuminates the carvings. from there it can access any other Zy-Karo with an energy signature that the user is familiar with this is normally done by the users energy manipulation but some can be built to allow users to manually scroll through on more advanced ones.  While these are located across all of Zhu society they are not mass produced in factories, which each one hand made by a group of craftsmen specializing in chi works. This manner of creating them means more advanced and larger ones can be hard to replace if they become broken or damaged. And outside of nobility it is normally weeks before someone can get a new Zy-Karo.

The Spider

Art by http://kopianget.deviantart.com/

Will skip the concept for this one for the time being, and give her brief bio. Not as indepth as some of the other ones but that is because of her role in the story.

The woman known as The Spider was once a promising fighter in Zhu society, seen as someone who would one day becoming a legendary martial artist due to her unique abilities and skills.  But following problems in her life she turned away from society and became a deadly fighter feared in distant lands.  No one knows what exactly she was doing in her absence, but the woman that came back was changed and beneath her polite actions were always sinister undertones.  She hangs around high society once more, but many feel she is plotting something and all fear the venom that her name implies.

Aya Icon?

Feedback on the demo seems to want an Aya Icon next to the text box. Made a quick version for the general, idea but it will likely be something like this.

Before actually using it, I'd make it so the whole box is to the side of it. And edit the image some, so that her face is clearer and larger.

Ghost Image

Just showing the ghost girl from the last post in how she actually looks instead of a sketch. Expect some other little things like that in future demos, of minor characters and things to interact with to help give life to the palace.

Empty Backgrounds?

The next demo I do will offer a bit more freedom in where to go, in order to showcase how the game will work.  In between major story bits you are able to chose where to go/what to do as such you may sometimes go to an area without a character and simply see something like this.

Normally on those it would simply say no one is around and you'd be able to choose somewhere else or something else to do. But at certain times you'll see the menu still up.

When this happens it means that even though none of the characters can be seen, that something in the area can be interacted with via either "Talk"  or "Examine". For example sometimes in the library you can talk to the ghosts you see there.

And here is a sketch of her sprite.

Rak-Zanu

I'm going to be going through old entries and updating them soon, so they may be worth re-looking at in a week or two.

But this is an explanation of what Rak-Zanu are.

Rak-Zanu is a term exclusive to the Nobility of the Zhu empire, and represents something that only applies to them. While servants can be bought or inherited by any member of society, Rak-Zanu are a special rank of servant that swears a life oath to any rank of noble. A Rak-Zanu is the heard servant of said noble and becomes the equivalent of one rank below them, granting them status and protection from laws that would otherwise affect them. They spend the rest of their lives (though they get off days, outside of emergencies) protecting and serving the noble and helping to achieve whatever their goals are.  Most Rak-Zanu are primarily bodyguards and as such extensive combat training is required for the position, but some serve other roles such as adviser or caretaker if the noble is a young child; a few Rak-Zanu are even personal chefs. Rak-Zanu are the responsibility of their masters and they are legally allowed to ignore all but the most sacred of laws and traditions if it will protect the noble they serve.  When one becomes to injured or old to effectively serve they instead become the assistant of their replacement, or in some cases the coach.

Demo Explanation

So just a quick thing explaining demos, since the first one will hopefully drop within the new next few days.

Basically there will be 2 kinds of demos, short character focused ones and larger story driven ones.

The first kind will be more common and used to give people a look at the various characters in short play sessions, this are normally more simple slice of life type situations.

The 2nd kind are longer and will only be a few, showing either early looks at the story or related things to it, to give people an idea of what to expect.

Expect the first demo to be a look at Rani

Empress Formal Idea

The lines of the Alternate Empress design, a look for her during ceremonies and other special events. While she doesn't normally wear super casual outfits or anything we wanted a new look for her that showed off both her elegance and how she is perceived by the culture. So we added more decoration on her clothing, and gave her a more elegant version of Princess Aya's cloth.  The Zhu Empress also serves a religious purpose of sorts as she is seen as the avatar of their Goddess so we have the golden object attached to her back, something attached to her by servants before big events where it is needed.

Rani Formal

And The finished version of Formal Rani. This will be the design used for scenes at special events and ceremonies during the Visual Novel.  For a split second you may see her wear it properly but she will always be unhappy about being told to look and act like a more proper lady of her position.

Rani formal Design idea

Normally I explain the idea behind it. But this time I'll let the amazingly talented StarTwo explain.

"We wanted to give her an outfit that somehow showed that she was connected to Princess Aya by details on the outfit (the motif on her sleeve and her headpiece as well as the little pendants on her outfit-except in Rani they are silver opposed to the original golden) and with some of the colours, although we tried to keep Rani's in darker tones than Princess Aya.

To make Rani true to herself, we made her undress her right outer jacket sleeve and tuck it on her belt, she's wearing her own pants underneath the formal outfit (the outfit should be worn without pants, like Princess Aya's), she is wearing the feather accessory from her everyday outfit and her hair is supposed to be all tucked in on her headpiece, but we imagined Rani decided otherwise and just let's the hair spike up, doing only half of the demanded hairdo by the rules."

Aya Formal Design

Art by Startwo
While obviously characters won't be realistic and change clothes every day for the same reason that other cartoons and games don't do it.  But I did want to have a few different outfits for the different situations, and this above is Aya for serious formal occasions and ceremonies. Her normal outfit isn't super casual or anything, but I wanted something more fancy for her actual princess duties.  Star Two based the design off of her normal look, giving a more formal and lady like spin to create the princess garb.

Ing Rao Bio

Art by http://kopianget.deviantart.com/

A Tribal by birth Ing Rao spent her childhood in the jungles outside of the Empire. There she was trained to be a hunter, not only to catch food but to help defend her tribe from the various beasts and monsters that roam the wilderness.  As a young teenager she was hunting by herself when she wandered into a nearby village, there her life was changed forever when she met a retired chef once renown all throughout the Empire.  She returned every day and soon became his student, learning the cooking art of his family and using her hunting skills to gain more exotic ingredients for them to make use of.  As the years passed she became both a master chef and hunter/tracker, soon picking up his former name as she began to travel the Empire crafting dishes desired by even the highest nobles and foreign leaders. She continues to do so despite constant requests to hire her permanently, she instead focuses on building her knowledge and skills and increasing the honor of her art by attempting to craft a dish worthy of going down in their peoples legends.

Zhu Race Sheet/Info

Art by http://starduo.deviantart.com/

Native to the kingdom of Xerathis are the Zhu race known as Xerin. Outside of the Zhuni the Xerin are the most populous Zhu race within the Capital Kingdom. Appearance wise they look like Zhuni with fox ears and tails naturally growing on them, the tails ranging anywhere from 1 to 9 in number. With more tails being a sign of higher magic potential (3 Being the average 9 being very rare) and being one of the biggest status symbols among each other. Unlike the Zhuni who live as individuals and small family units, Xerin tend to be divided in much larger clans with all of their communities both in their own kingdom and within the greater Empire being made up of people within the same or closely related clans. The clans that the royals come from is often a subject of heated debate among Xerin and can get ugly fast, and they will frequently go and try to speak to the Empress about how the certain clans shouldn't be allowed to.

Culturally they are very similar to Zhuni when it comes to how important Honor is to them but differ when it comes to their primary form of worship. Whereas for Zhuni it is discipline, for Xerin it is grace resulting in their major form of expression being not in the martial arts but in elaborate dances. Through these dances they activate their chi much how a Zhuni would with a stance, allowing them to manipulate their own and nearby energy as they do so. These dances range from forms of complex communication (Zhu Races can see more layers of the dance than other races) to ways of dueling, and when large numbers of them do certain dances they are known to directly alter the weather of their kingdom. This results in them mostly being support units in military situations, dancing from behind the front lines to aid the more directly combat minded Zhu in a battle. Their dances can easily be altered for battle though and many of the stronger ones are more than capable of channeling up waves of mystical energy and such.

Native to the capital, Zhu Shang, and the majority Zhu population overall are the Zhuni. Appearance wise they are very human, specifically appearing as humans from the region of East Asia. That appearance extends to the common aesthetic of many buildings and the majority of their clothing, resulting in the superficial feel of being in ancient china to travelers from Earth. The most major difference between humans and Zhuni is of course that that as Zhu, Zhuni have a different form of chi and extra senses built solely around energy. In general Zhuni are also physically greater than humans in every aspect, although with significant training a human could bridge the gap on most. They as a whole tend to look pretty fit, with the partial energy being state of their existence pretty much making even the unhealthy Zhuni rarely look it unless the result of a powerful poison or illness. When it moments of high emotion or stress their eyes tend to glow whatever color their chi tends to manifest itself as, their aura subtly becoming visible around them as well. Appearance wise the sexual differences between men and women are the same as with humans, though it mostly ends there. Physically speaking there is no difference between Zhuni men and women in regards to strength, speed, or toughness; though the women tend to be lighter and thus easier to knock backwards. In regards to the Dantian women have a much wider center and their chi reserves go deeper on average, with men having a narrow dantian that makes using chi easier but normally weaker.

Zhuni have a very stable birth rate and although spikes occur they mostly keep around the same population for extended periods of time, with the majority of people almost always being in their teens and 20s. The average life expectancy is around 55 although through magic and chi control one can live to be hundreds of years old, it simply takes too much to be a practical solution to most. For the same reasons the physical effects of aging rarely show on Zhu outside of their 20s, their bodies keeping a mostly consistent form no matter how old they get and only the energy itself beginning to wear down. Most couples have their first child between the ages of 15 and 17 and another one shortly after; the Zhuni having a pregnancy of only 4 months makes many births end up closer together then on Earth. The family duties are pretty evenly split although with the fathers normally having a much larger role than the mother while the first child is a toddler as she will be in the military and on active duty in most cases. A mostly matriarchal society (this extends to the most other Zhu races also), the Zhuni mothers are head of the household and tend to be who makes all the major decisions involving a family or clan.

Culturally they are a society that admires strength and martial prowess above most things, resulting in the highest levels of fame being that of great warriors and martial artists. To keep that focus all women are forced to undergo military training and brief service upon graduation from school, with men being able to choose if they want to. They are deeply entrenched in tradition and it shows in their extreme respect for their environment, animals, and the importance of family. They are bound by the concept of honor to such a degree that if known for having been dishonored you are treated as subhuman by many and stripped of your job in most cases. Entire books and branches of government exists to help define what things are dishonorable and honorable as well as to what degree since it is such an important part of life within the nation.

The Xenkor are a Zhu race who mostly stay within their own kingdom (Xenkor Hu), with very few full bloods living in the other Zhu kingdoms, although Zhu Shang has more than others due to being the capital. Their most distinct physical feature is the fact that they all have gray skin and bright red eyes, making their very human appearance seem very alien. These gray skinned Zhu's kingdom is on a world where barely any sunlight gets through, resulting in most areas being in complete darkness. As such Xenkor have weak eyesight/ extreme light sensitivity only being able to see up close and in low light, them being completely blind during a sunny day on another world or even a well lit room. As such they primarily see through energy perception and a form of echolocation allowing them to maneuver around and go about their lives with very little problems, as they are able to get all but the small details of people and things.

The main cultural distinction between them and the other Zhu is that they value cunning as second to honor. The Xenkor people are just as aggressive and violent as the Zhuni can be only they don't brawl in the streets like their siblings, instead they goad, trick, and trap each other when they have problems. Moving up in a position is all about persuasion, it's not enough to have the needed skill you have to convince or trick the others into agreeing with you. They are very rapid thinkers, their minds thinking things about everything they know to aid them the second they learn something. Their chi tends to be less refined than the others as they use it primarily as a way to survive, but it allows them to require next to no training to use it as a sense augmenter and they even are born being able to use it to substitute breathing for a few minutes at a time. In the military Xenkor tend to be assassins and spies and stick to ranged energy based combat when in direct fights. Given their methods of seeing, they are virtually impossible to sneak up on, and also make good look outs. While not normally trained beyond basic level martial arts, the Xenkor that do decide to become more dedicated warriors are very feared given their unique way of seeing and rapid minds making misdirection and feints all but useless on them.

Making their home in arid Galkahr region of the planet Ternu Si, are the race known as Ethera. They are one of the younger Zhu races, one of the last few to be created and the most recent to be reintegrated. Their appearance is that of humans with very rich solid red and pink skin tones and often glowing chi points across their body in tattoo like patterns. They tend to be heavier than most other Zhu races, their bones being very dense and their muscles capable of growing at a moment's notice. They are the most naturally gifted of the Zhu races in terms of power both physical and magical, quickly coming upon more potent applications of their abilities with little to no training. They are capable of boosting their abilities even more by going into a berserker state known as Qi-Zan where their chi pushes itself into overdrive their bodies becoming harder to damage and all of their abilities vastly increasing as their mind does nothing but pump the energy out at whatever is before it. The ability is very powerful and hardwired into their genes, occurring on its own both whenever stressed until they learn to control it. During the state they have difficulty stopping themselves until they run out of energy and fall asleep, or are incapacitated. While various objects and methods arose to snap them out of this, the only reliable way was through special signals sent from chi of other Zhu races or by something or someone they have a strong connection to. The most effective and reliable method is through the dancing of talented or powerful Xerin, the dance calming them back to normal rather quickly in most cases.

When the Zhu races were split apart tens of thousands of years ago, the Ethera handled the isolation the worst. Their natural aggression and uneasy mental state made them quickly become enemies with other intelligent species on the planet their home ended up forming on. Eventually they ended up the only species of any intelligence left on the planet, resulting in a society that was only stable long enough to rebuild after it destroyed its cities fighting itself. When they were found by the rest of Zhu and their world reconnected to the Empire they were immensely grateful, and have reformed their actual Zhu society with the help of their sister races keeping them calm.

Ing Rao concept

art by Kopi
As evidenced by some of the other characters I like to showcase different aspects of society with some of these characters.  With Ing Rao the idea was to showcase a few different things at once through her. For background wanted someone that had a connection with Tribals since otherwise they wouldn't have a real presence, so she was created to sort of be a bridge between tribal communities and the main society of the empire. Most of the Visual Novel handles the concept of honor and family traditions through martial arts but I wanted to have a way to show there are other aspects besides that.  So adapted an old idea for a monster hunter who hunts exotic beasts to use for her hobby of cooking, into Ing Rao who is a famous chef and hunter.  The darker skin and different dress style was made to help distinguish her from those from the main parts of the Empire.

Xiao Quan Bio

Art by http://kopianget.deviantart.com/
Born to two lesser nobles she was groomed from as soon as she could talk to interact with the various factions and nations that involve themselves with the Empire. She was schooled and trained by them to be an ambassador of sorts with other nations as well helping to broker deals with the various guilds and groups. Unfortunately for them she never had much interest in that or anything else they tried to have her focus on. She was instead fascinated by the world of martial arts, starting one she saw an exhibition match between two local heroes. She fell in love with martial arts at that moment and would do anything to see more; she collected countless books and went to every tournament and event that she could.  By the time she was 13 she had an encyclopedia like knowledge of the fighting styles of her region as well as the techniques and family lines of various fighters.  While her parents supported her interest as a hobby they didn't allow her to actually pursue her dream of being a fighter herself.  Eventually she had enough of not being allowed to chase her dream, and with the help of her loyal retainer she ran away from her home in pursuit of dream of a martial arts adventure.

Xiao Quan Concept

Art by http://kopianget.deviantart.com/
The idea for Xiao Quan came with me wanting to involve a younger character that could help shed light on lesser nobility as well show how the lives of younger royals are. So that is the idea behind her background, a young noble who hangs around the main ones.   Her personality was a result of my desire to want a more nerdy fangirl character, and since a lot of the story involves martial arts it made sense for that to be her obsession.  So she was made to have a more cute look because I felt it would mesh well with her over the top attitude regarding martial arts and just how excited she can get about it.  I wanted some sort of yo-yo as something she can play around with and even fight with to show her creativity and knowledge of technique, the artist behind her decided chinese yo-yos would be best.

Eraeli Bio

Art by Henry

From a land beyond even the farthest corners of the Empire, Eraeli is known to her people as a Vahun-Raat. Meaning Child of the Gods, the Vahun-Raat are individuals given blessings from the gods of the land which for Eraeli meant a third eye.  The only one within her clan she was at one point being primed to be a spiritual leader of sorts, but instead found her true calling as the Avatar of Crafting.  Using her third eye to perceive and understand the true potential of anything (or anyone) she sees, Eraeli has become the most respected blacksmith within her lands as well as an excellent coach for aspiring hunters and warriors.  Eventually growing bored with her Vahun-Raat life she set out to go on an adventure to see distant lands, experience new techniques, craft with more exotic materials, and bring home new ideas and philosophies to her people.   During her travels she has already made quite a name for herself in other lands, with her unique abilities making her in high demand among the rich and powerful seeking someone to create the perfect monument or weapon in their honor. She finds herself in the Empire in hopes of gaining an audience with the Empress to fully explore Zhu materials and forge a weapon as a gesture of friendship from her distant people in case they ever have official contact.

Eraeli Concept

I knew early on I wanted to have some characters that helped show the magic nature of the setting without being mages themselves. I also wanted a character that while they could fight it wasn't their primary purpose. I combined the two and developed it into the idea for Eraeli. I made her a traveling blacksmith from outside of the Empire so I could have a reason to show in greater detail how others feel about the setting as well as expand on what world building would be possible over the course of the VN.  Setting her from outside of the empire gave me greater flexibility in what she looked like and decided to go with a more African influence with addition of a third eye for a more mystical look helping to cement that she was indeed from a fantasy setting and offer both a needed perspective as well as show off some more non combat mystic elements.

Rontu

art by http://danillovesfood.deviantart.com/
This is a domesticated equine like creature within the setting called a Rontu. Some more info follows.

They are the most common form of personal transportation among the Zhu people. Most households own at least one and is used for quick transportation between 1 to 2 people. As such Cities have locations to leave them at, and many stores have lots made to hold them. It is also common for cities to have fields specifically for you to leave them in upon entering the area, where they will be called back when you are done. They are treated as any other property with laws differentiating no different than any household item and less than weapons. As such they are thought of as living items and not really as pets.

Lifespan: 5 to 10 years

Behavior: They are docile creatures towards people, rarely showing signs of aggression unless attacked by them. Towards other animals they are the same unless it’s a predator in which case they will try to run away. Generally speaking a Rontu will wander around, eating and running in a large circle when left alone by its owner. They’ll try to stay in the area for a day, after which if no sign of their owner they’ll leave to head home.

Keiji Bio

Art by http://mahenbu.deviantart.com/

The Shima Clan had traditionally stayed passive in the wars that ravaged their land, a collection of religious villages that focused more on dealings with the spirit world.  Over time they found themselves dragged into conflict more and more, the changing nature of war and politics of the region slowly building up more and more enemy clans that sought their destruction.  Shima had no choice but to embrace the old ways once more, their summoners and samurai retrained for war over the last few generations to face these new conflicts and more than capable of going on the offensive.  This new more war ready Shima clan was the one that Keiji was born into, one of Boss Shima's several sons his life was a mix of luxury and bloodshed.  While not next in line for control he was still expected to be a leader and began fighting in the wars of his clan when he was barely even a teenager.  He had received the best of training and been augmented with old Shima relics to further his potential, awakening a deadly killing machine beneath his soft girly appearance.  Outside of battle the young Lord always seems happy and cheerful and more focused on romantic pursuits than any glory.  Any familiar with him know however that regardless of his personality his loyalty to his clan means he will do anything to protect and hidden under his feminine gaze are the eyes of a hardened killer.

Keiji Concept

I always knew from the start I wanted a more Japanese based character and had already developed a land for said characters to be from (Will speak on that in a later post). Toyed with what kind of character beyond that and eventually decided a noble from one of the clans of said region.  Was interested in doing a very feminine male so went with it for Keiji a samurai prince of sorts who can easily pass as a Japanese girl. I felt it fit and added to the design and a good contrast to what you'd expect/he comes off and what his story actually is.

Princess Rin Yin Qiao, heir to the throne of Xerathis and niece to the Zhu Empress.  Developing nine tails as a young child she was considered a blessing from the Great Mother herself, the future queen being one of the select few to develop the holy nine tails.  Such a heavenly birth of course led to high expectations, made even higher by the fact that her mother was one of the daughters of the Matriarch Xing Yi Qiao.  Rin lived up to the expectations in terms of magic potential and beauty, but that was where it ended.  Instead of the driven young princess people expected Rin enjoys the perks of her status with none of the responsibility.  She is notorious for avoiding her studies and training, instead focusing on her own pleasure and entertainment at all times.  When it comes with politics and other important meetings she has to be dragged in, and even then she is more likely to spend the time flirting instead of seriously considering what is being discussed.  After a while her parents had enough and she was sent to stay with the Empress for a while, in hopes that her aunt would be able to force some discipline on the girl and make her see the seriousness of the future.

Rin concept

Art by Henry

Early on I realized I needed to show how closely related all of the Zhu races are and feature more than just Zhuni as part of the Imperial family.  After a while it was decided that one of the princesses would be a Xerin, a 9 tailed one to convey more prestige and sort of contrast Aya's less regal look.  Made the character someone that would allow me to focus on a similar theme as Aya only with a different aspect of being royal/society  and sort of do the flip side of how Aya herself handles it.  Also find a good character to show some more lighthearted stuff within the palace.  For the look she was directly inspired by Ahri of League of Legends more so than any actual kitsune or similar stories.
